Even though 2019 has only just begun, preparations for New York Fashion Week have already begun. Even though February is typically a slower month than September, and even though Marc Jacobs already showed his gorgeous collection paying homage to Vivienne Westwood last Thursday (you can never accuse him of being late! ), there is still a lot to look forward to, even if snow might not be one of them.

At least one theatrical dance performance (Wiederhoeft, whose show will also feature a “Recommended Reading” list that includes Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet), the return of Rodarte and Anna Sui to the runways, a special pop-up presentation of Ella Emhoff’s signature colourful knitwear on Saturday with pieces available for pre-order and purchase, a late-night appointment with a So, allow us to lead you through the next seven days (five full days and one half day) of style, fun, fantasy, and mild chaos.

A Superb Year

After just winning the American Accessory Designer of the Year award, Ral Lopez of Luar has been given the honour of performing the final show of the week at 8 o’clock in the evening. And Lopez isn’t taking the rescheduling lightly either. From February 15th through February 17th, he and Stella Artois will host a pop-up shop at the Faurschou New York gallery, where guests can “live la vida Luar” (I’m sorry) through a series of events centred on the four pillars of the Luar label’s community: fashion, music, the arts, and family. There will be a mockumentary screening created in partnership with DIS, a video installation created in partnership with Jordan showcasing the looks he created for the WNBA player Aerial Powers, and a panel titled “The Importance of Building a Tribe” featuring López and some of his closest friends and family.

It’s Not a Comeback

Back on the schedule are runway presentations from Rodarte, Anna Sui, and Thom Browne (one month into his tenure as CFDA chairman). Although they were only gone for a few seasons, we are thrilled to once again be a part of the worlds they have created for us to enjoy. Sui explained via email that the Peppermint Lounge, a small restaurant on 45th Street that was transformed into the hottest club in the 1960s for dancing, was an inspiration for her decision to host an intimate show in a nightclub. Further investigation led me to learn that the Beatles and the Rolling Stones frequented the club, where an incredible photograph of Jane Holzer dancing the twist can be found. This idea sparked a line of clothing designed for “twisting the night away.” What a long time!

A Long Absence Brings a Person Closer Together

For example, this season’s lineup lacks appearances from Peter Do, Barragán, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Adam Lippes, and No Sesso. Though we understand the necessity of rest and relaxation, please know how much you will be missed during their absence. This season, designers like Tom Ford and Maisie Wilen are opting for digital distribution, while designers like Victor Glemaud are moving to a see now/buy now model (so get your accounts ready come September).
