Tending in Africa

Mixing raffia-lined garments in bright colours with dresses coated in sequins or airy silk fringes, Imane Ayissi wove African textiles into his haute couture collection shown in Paris on Thursday.

This is a showcase for the skills of African artisans, Ayissi said.

Showing off sculptural dresses and sequin-coated tops trimmed with raffia, the models strutted their stuff down a runway in a grand mansion near the Arc de Triomphe.

A traditional tie-dye method was used to create a minidress in bright orange, red, and green hues; orange Swarovski crystals were sprinkled throughout the garment for extra sparkle.

Ayissi, in a bright pink dress, said, “We’ve gone through some very difficult times, with the COVID-19 pandemic that was hard on everyone; it’s time to try to rebound.”

The Paris-based designer was born in Cameroon, and her work can currently be seen in the “Africa Fashion” exhibit at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

Reputable people and flashy lifestyles

On a cold Wednesday night, thousands of fans lined the Pont Alexandre III bridge to scream as celebrities like Anne Hathaway and Kylie Minogue, as well as K-pop star Suga of BTS fame, came and went.

When supermodel Kristen McMenamy tripped on the runway, screams could be heard throughout the appropriately named Bridge Club venue. Baz Luhrmann, the film’s director, also discussed the film’s Oscar nominations with The Associated Press (AP).

Designer: Valentino; Label: Le Club Couture

Fashion elite, including Anna Wintour and Luhrmann, watched and tapped their feet to Visage’s 1980s hit “Fade to Grey” as it reverberated through the club’s stone arches.

Club kids of both sexes were welcome to attend this show.

Designer Pierpaolo Piccioli took a satirical approach to traditional couture by constructing micro tops out of tulle bows, jumpsuits out of thousands of feathers, and evening jackets out of metal beading.

In the spirit of 1980s euphoria, he had a great time doing it, and the polka dot borders on the designs show it.

Guests were reaching for their cameras as they were greeted by a sea of sheer lace trench coats and ruffled poet’s blouses, seemingly plucked from the closet of the late Visage singer Steve Strange.

The ecstatic Minogue explained that the show was about learning “to break free of the rules and inhabit your true self… You are currently in Paris. Now you’re right in the thick of things.

The Valentino club couture show at Maxime’s continued with a couture DJ set while guests were whisked away in limousines from the yelling crowds.
